JENKINS Reverend William
He was born during the first week of December 1723, and christened by John Thomas curate of Llanddeusant, a few days later, according to the affidavit of David Jenkins of Llanddeusant, his father, which serves the place of a certificate of baptism. Ordained deacon 25th august 1751 (Priest 25th august 1753) and licensed to a curacy at Port Eynon in Gower. I do not know how long he stayed in Port Eynon but he is described as curate of Llandeilo-fawr in Bishop's Transcripts from 1765 to 1799. For some reason or other there is no record of a licence of the curacy of Llandeilo to him until 15th September 1788.
He was collated to the Vicarage of Mydrim with Llanfihangel Abercowin 5th July 1779. The next collation is that of William Morgan 2nd July 1799 vacancy by the death of William Jenkins. He had been licensed to Brechfa 26th March 1787, and his successor there was licensed 9th September 1799, vacancy here too by the death of William Jenkins (see David Jenkins). He evidently did not serve at Mydrim and Llanfihangel Abercowin but had a curate there.
C.R.O. Carmarthen reported January 1978 that Llandeilo Parish register - now in their custody shows:-
Reverend William Jenkins, Curate of the Parish for 35 years died 19th June 1799, buried 22 June 1799.
Letitia Jenkins of Llandeilo town buried 29th April 1814, aged 75 years.
William Jenkins married Letitia (Lettice). It was not found out until 1970 (see David Jenkins) that this was his second marriage. A second marriage at the age of 41 which produced nine children is certainly surprising news. Details of his first marriage would be most interesting. The children of the second marriage were:-
George christened 6th October 1765 William do. 18th June 1767 John do. 7th February 1769 Mary do. 10th February 1771 Thomas do. 10th November 1774 James do. 16th October 1776 Letitia do. 9th February 1779 Jane Maria 23 August 1784
There is no record of this second marriage at Llandeilo, and the christening dates were supplied by the National Library, but for some reason or other there is no mention of Jane.
