Welcome

Reverend William
Jenkins

The following appeared in a Carmarthen paper:-  'Miss Howells of St Clears (grand-daughter of the Reverend William Jenkins vicar of Mydrim), placed a beautiful east window in the chancel of Mydrim parish church to her
grandfather's (Reverend William Jenkins, mentioned above) memory.'  This information would appear to be incorrect.  No record of a Miss Howells
connected with the Reverend William Jenkins, and the memorial window is in memory of the Reverend Rees Thomas Jenkins Vicar of Mydrim for 46 years.  Died 1888.  Also of the Reverend John Jenkins, father of the above, Vicar of the parish for 40 years.  Died 1847.

No mention of the Reverend William Jenkins in his grandson's diary.  Vicar of Brechfa in 1946 could give no information - said his parish record had been destroyed pre-1913.  No gravestones of Jenkins in Llanddeusant, and church locked each time it was visited.  It had been said by several members of the family that two memorial stones in Llandeilo church commemorated the Reverend William, his wife and son George.  Stones not replaced when church rebuilt 1848.  Academic qualifications of the Reverend William
Jenkins not known.  NOT listed in Alumni Oxoniensis or in the
corresponding Cambridge lists.

Three letters addressed to the Rector, Port Eynon over last 15 years asking for information.  One answer received November 1977.  It had been
suggested to the Rector that during William Jenkins's 14 years or so at Port
Eynon he had married for the first time, had children, buried his first wife and married again, and parish register particulars were asked for.  Back came a list of irrelevant baptisms and christenings of persons called Jenkins between 1752 and 1766.  All apparently unconnected with William Jenkins and no
record of any marriage.  following further investigation it is now thought that William Jenkins who went to Porteynon as a learner was stationed at Rhosilli (the daughter church) which has its own parish register, but no reply from the present Rector about this.  Unfortunately, while the Reverend William Jenkins was a deacon, priest and curate at Port Eynon, the rector at Port
Eynon was the Reverend William Jenkins (see David Jenkins)

A list of sermons preached by the Reverend William Jenkins at Llandeilofawr church between 1769 and 1783.  The list was compiled by William Jones Esq: JP and DL of Cilsane (father of Griffith Bowen Jones Esq: of Gurrey, Near Llandeilo, who died 1870) :-

April 8th 1770  (Sunday before Easter).  An English sermon preached by Mr Jenkins on the following text: 'Then Judas, which had betrayed Him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the Chief Priest and Elders saying 'I have sinned in that I betrayed the innocent blood'. And they said 'What is that to us? See thou to that'.   (Matthew xxvii. 3 & 4).
